One of the most frequently asked questions I get from couples is, “what are some reasons to do a first look?” and “should I do a first look?”. And it’s a great question for sure! Maybe you’ve always dreamed of something more traditional. Walking down the aisle and your groom seems you for the first time. But first looks have become so popular now, and a lot of people love them because you get to have some alone time right before your big day.
That being said, a lot of my couples worry that walking down the aisle won’t be as special if they do a first look – which is a totally fair concern! I’m going to break down 3 reasons you should do a first look in this blog. After reading through these, I hope you have some clarity on whether or not a first look is right for you.
1. Be more present on your day
“Your wedding day will go by so fast!”
How many times have you heard that already? Probably too many? Well I am here to tell you, it is SO true. A first look carves out intentional time for ONLY you and your partner to have some time alone on your wedding day. No distractions, no pressure, just the two of you. Your day will be spent around your loved ones, taking group photos, having fun at your reception, etc. So if you want to have intentional time with just your partner, then you’ll definitely want to do a first look!
Trust me, I have witnessed many of these first look moments, and they are moments you will remember for the rest of your life. They are intimate, unforgettable, memories. Plus, you’ll have amazing photos that capture all of those moments. My goal as a photographer is for you to have photos that make you jump right back into those moments and feel them all over again.
2. If you do a first look, you’ll add more time back to your day
Give yourself the biggest gift on your wedding day – time! If you do a first look, you’ll be able to go ahead and do most of your bride and groom portraits before the ceremony. Maybe even your bridal party photos. This means that after the ceremony, all you’ll really need to get done is your family photos, and then you can head to your reception and enjoy your evening having fun! Having more time on your wedding day will make your day feel less rushed, stress-free, and fun. And those are the memories you should have!
3. It will calm your nerves – SO much
On top of all the wedding day stress, having nerves is a real thing on any wedding day. So how would you feel if you had some alone time with your groom before the ceremony? How would you feel to have that intimate time together? And have FUN taking your portraits together? Doing a first look is going to calm your nerves, I guarantee it. And if you’re someone who doesn’t love being the center of attention, or your nervous about being around people all day, then I really do recommend a first look!
I hope these reasons to do a first look help you have some clarity on whether or not it’s the right choice for you. I personally did not have a first look on our wedding day. And honestly? I really wish we did. We had a beautiful, special day. But if we could go back and do a first look, we both have said that we would.
