It’s 2021 and what better time to brighten up your home than the start of a fresh new year! Especially after 2020! If you’ve taken down your Christmas decorations and you’re feeling that post Christmas slump, this post is just for you! Some of my friends will be keeping their Christmas decorations up till February – so this post will be waiting for you whenever you’re ready 🙂
I LOVE all things home decor, and looking for ways to organize. I enjoy going to The Container Store way more than I should. Neutrals and gold accents make me so happy. Pops of color here and there, and a couple of rustic touches? Count me in.
After a year like 2020 that forced us to all spend more time at home than maybe we were planning, I think it’s so important to have a space that feels like your own retreat. You don’t have to spend a gazillion dollars (hi gold spray paint!) to make that happen. I’m sharing 5 ways to brighten up your home that helped make us excited to welcome a new year (and not depressed that Christmas is over!)
1. Start with a neutral base to brighten up your home
Our couches, fireplace, rug, and pillows are all shades of white and ivory. It gives you the perfect palette to change up your decor, add pops of color, or whatever seasonal decor you want to add.
2. Add pops of color using decorative objects
If you know me, you know how much I love all things gold. I’m not sure how this happened, but a lot of times, my friends will see something gold or sparkly and text me or tell me they thought of me. And I can’t say I’m complaining honestly, haha! Adding pops of your favorite colors will really breathe life into your space. especially if you included lots of neutral tones to complement the colors!
3. Add some plants to brighten up your home
Speaking of breathing life into your space, plants kind of amaze me with how much they can change the feel of a room. Seriously, adding ANY plant will make your home feel so much fresher. We have a mix of faux and real plants because of our pets, and let’s be honest, some plants are just SO stinkin hard to keep alive (looking at you, Fiddle leaf fig!). I won’t call myself a plant lady or anything, but I have about 4-6 plants (including faux) and I can really tell how much they’ve livened up our home!
4. Add some framed photos of you and your family!
Come on guys, I’m a photographer, there was no way I was going to leave this one out 😉 There is really nothing quite like walking by a framed photo of Ethan and me hanging in our home, and feeling like we’re right back in that happy moment. As cheesy as this sounds, it really feels like adding “pops of happy” in various spots in our home.
5. Invest in some cute storage for each room
Let’s talk about what doesn’t brighten up your space – clutter! Thankfully there are so many cute baskets, containers, and functional storage that doubles as furniture. A place for everything and everything in it’s place, right?!
6. Get rid of stuff you don’t need anymore
Speaking of clutter, if it isn’t important or functional enough to have a place to go, do you really need it? Think about it! I watched ‘Tidying Up With Marie Kondo’ a little too much last year (okay fine this year too!), and the whole ‘spark joy’ thing is actually pretty spot on. I know this one is hard but just think about it what you can get rid of that might just be clutter!
7. Add a new scent to brighten up your home
I get it, that Christmas Tree candle from Bath and Body Works smells so unbelievably good. But hey, there are plenty of other non Christmas scents that are great too! If you want to move on from Christmas or you’re too sad to take down the Christmas decorations, I promise, a fresh new candle is going to help 🙂
I wish you all the best for the new year and I hope these 7 ways to brighten up your home helps you kick some of those post Christmas blues!
